Tricycle

When you make the decision not to drive a car, really, there’s a lot of handwaving about big problems that you’re going to face. Oh, groceries? No problem, I’ll just get some panniers! Great, for two bags of groceries. Great, if the grocery store is a five-minute walk away. Not-so-great if you have to go from Dorchester to Cambridge to get to the nearest co-op that stocks food that you can support buying. Not-so-great if you want to buy more than two, maybe three, bags of groceries. Definitely not-so-great if it’s the middle of winter, and you’re watching the kid, and you need to re-stock toilet paper in addition to getting five bags of groceries.

I’m jealous of the things that car-people don’t have to worry about. But I’m not jealous that they have to sit in a car while I’m out enjoying the weather (yes, even enjoying the rain or the sleet) and getting some exercise and not really spending any more time on my bike and usually going faster and not having to go to the gym so that my muscles don’t atrophy from spending all day in front of the computer.

The point is that we got a tricycle. We’ll probably get a larger one later, but we’re taking baby steps in the right direction here:

(Sorry for the crap computer camera photos). Just an enormous enormous gigantic front basket on that beast and we’re good to go! And maybe a trailer.

And when the time is right, we’re going to get one of these.
